SkyCity Atrium Update, Auckland
Client: SkyCity
Project value: NZ$20 million

SkyCity is a world class entertainment complex and casino in the heart of Auckland’s CBD. The iconic Sky Tower and SkyCity event facility and hotel draw up to 25,000 visitors daily. The SkyCity atrium serves as entry and access to all facilities.

A complete interior refurbishment created a grand entrance into SkyCity. The upgrade included the build and fitout of a new 250-person capacity restaurant and sports bar on level two of the atrium. The client’s main priority throughout the project was that the major reconfiguration and refurbishment works caused as little disruption as possible to guest and visitors to the hotel.

The project involved removal of three sets of escalators and main staircase and installation of the longest two escalators in New Zealand, building 800m2 of new floor area, structural infill on the casino floor to create an additional 290m2, structural strengthening to allow the new restaurant build to proceed, significant mechanical and electrical upgrades and a fast-tracked program to meet the scheduled opening of the new restaurant.

TSA delivered design management from concept to detailed/construction design, main contractor procurement, construction management, programming and contract administration. In addition to project management services, TSA also acted as Engineer to Contract.

Works were programmed, sequenced and extensively hoarded to ensure minimal disruption and protection to SkyCity operations and visitors.
The atrium is the ‘front door’ to the entire SkyCity, providing a modern and updated grand entrance to SkyCity’s tower, theatre, bars and restaurants. Completed two weeks early, the project received the NZ Commercial Leisure and Cultural Gold Award 2017.
