Project Milestone – Auckland Ferry Basin

The three elements of the southern canopy for the new ferry berths have been lifted into position in the ferry basin. The lifts were planned during nights over the course of a week in October. With each element weighing approximately 36 tonnes it took three cranes to lift and position it onto its supporting piles.

The three elements of the southern canopy for the new ferry berths have been lifted into position in the ferry basin. The lifts were planned during nights over the course of a week in October. With each element weighing approximately 36 tonnes it took three cranes to lift and position it onto its supporting piles.

NZ Force subcontracted to the Downtown JV (DJV) were responsible for the bespoke and complex fabrication offsite at Hobsonville Point.  DJV transported the first three canopy elements down the Auckland harbour by barge over recent weeks.

There are three elements per canopy and three canopies so a total of nine lifts are planned. The remaining two canopies will be lifted and installed in early December and February.

It has taken much planning and liaison with client Auckland Transport to manage the complex lifts around busy ferry services. From TSA Project Manager and Engineer’s Rep, Angus Newsam has had key involvement with design and fabrication oversight and planning for the lifts, supported by TSA Senior Project Manager Rachel Kirk.
