After closing in 2017, QLDC worked closely with the Luggate and wider UpperCkutha community to plan for an innovative, future-proofed replacement community centre that will meet current and future needs of Luggate, the Upper Clutha and wider district.
The centre, Whare Mahana, will be a test case for future facilities in the Queenstown Lakes District and will be potentially the first Passive House-certified community facility in New Zealand. To meet the certified standard, the new hall must include high-performance windows and doors, excellent insulation, an airtight building envelope, no thermal bridges, mechanical ventilation and design-stage energy modelling.
